Mrs. Dalloway
March 23, 2008“The young man had killed himself; but she did not pity him; with the clock striking the hour, one, two, three, she did not pity him, with all this going on. There! the old lady had put out her light! The whole house was dark now with this going on, she repeated, and the words came to her, Fear no more the heat of the sun. She must go back to them. But what an extraordinary night! She felt somehow very like him—the young man who had killed himself. She felt glad that he had done it; thrown it away. The clock was striking. The leaden circles dissolved in the air. He made her feel the beauty; made her feel the fun. But she must go back. She must assemble” (186).
This passage occurs during Clarissa’s party and after she learns of Septimus’ suicide, she goes into a room to think about it. Even though they have never met, Clarissa feels a connection with him and identifies with him: “She felt somehow very like him.” They have a lot in common. Throughout the novel, Woolf made Septimus to be Clarissa’s double. They share many of the same traits and thoughts. At this point, Clarissa realizes how much alike Septimus and she really are. Their souls are connected. The “clock striking the hour, one, two, three,” and the party going on do not distract her. She is able to zone out and appreciate Septimus’ dramatic action of keeping his soul through death. She understands him and why he decided to kill himself instead of being overpowered by Sir William Bradshaw. She says “she must go back” and “assemble” because she is going to continue her life and make best with what she has. She is able to come to terms with her own life, age, and death.

Midnight Cowboy Review
February 13, 2008Sad, funny, and raw.
The Midnight Cowboy, a young man, tired of his boring life in Texas, thinks he can make it big in New York City. He’s clueless, naïve, and delusional. Once he’s in the Big Apple, he soon discovers that his dream is far from reality and struggles. He meets another struggler, Rizzo, and becomes friends with him. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow and how they tried to survive in the city.
Also, I really liked the soundtrack…
Dominica Paige Presentation
February 5, 2008One image that I found compelling out of the images Dominica showed us was the photograph of the the three, young boys smoking (don’t remember whose photo it is…).
It amazes me how this photo isn’t a still from a movie and that they’re not acting. Their clothes, their hats, their facial expressions… it’s priceless. They look tough. This is how they really were. You’d never see anything like this nowadays…
My “Cruise”
February 4, 2008Here’s the movie theater where everyone hangs out at on the weekend. Down the street and to the left is the Fire Department. You can never get used to the pulsating sirens. And to the right, is the Ecology Center/Zoo. My mom used to take me here often to feed the animals. Further along, is the infamous Lake Ronkonkoma. Supposively, one person drowns in this lake each year. Over to your left, is the park where my dad used to take me to many times to play tennis. And the little playground where my cousin and I climbed up the slide.
Graffiti Research Lab
January 30, 2008
Graffiti Research Lab, founded by Evan Roth and James Powderly, is an art group dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists and protesters with open source technologies for urban communication. The members of the group experiment in a lab and in the field to develop and test a range of experimental technologies. They document those efforts with video documentation and DIY instructions for each project and make it available for everybody.
